PASS WITH CARE

Property & Copyright Bárbara Herrnsdorf Photography DSC_4642

Daydreams
distractions
jubilations
jitters
exhaustions
emotions

Bubbling up
swirling around
consuming
fleeting
living
dying

Hitherto
henceforth
never again
forevermore –
we come
and go…

To the oncologists office for biopsy results
to the airport for your lover’s return from two tours of duty
to meet your estranged mother for the first time
to the morgue to identify your child’s body
to your first ever day of work
to take the bar exam for the third time
to see a divorce attorney
to your apartment after being fired

From dropping off your daughter on her first day of school
from your best friend’s funeral
from the closing on your first house
from the correctional facility where your spouse will spend the next 10 years
from the church after marrying your high school sweetheart a week after the 50th reunion
from your 2nd to your 3rd job so you can help pay for your father’s heart transplant
from your monthly court-appointed visit with your children
from the hospital to take your newborn home

Pass with care.

Echo, Echo

18972757214_4d233baed6_o

Echo, Echo

Echo, echo
all around me,
everywhere.

I’m not interested
in what’s been said
before.

Infinite boomerang of sameness;
it bangs me up
tosses me around
in an ocean of reverberation.

As much as I adore words
I abhor an echo.

I will lift my hands.
I will cup my ears.
I will stop the waves of the
endless echoes, facsimiles, from entering
and drowning out the very truth
of me.

In true timing
with only the beating of my own heart
above the cacophony of echoes,
I can find you.

And there,
next to you in the stillness
I will silently transmit
what words could never
express –
the unrepeatableness  of
my love for you.

The Pinwheel

The Pinwheel

Standing straight and silent as a sentry
inside a clay-potted herb garden and
under the kiss of the afternoon sun,
when a soft breeze blows
through the petals of the pinwheel
bringing it suddenly
to life.

Round and round
it creates ever so gentle a sweet, soothing sound –
that can only be reveled in
when a soul is completely
quiet.

Transformation of the Chrysalis

Transformation of the Chrysalis

First,
only black
no white,
then slowly,
sweeping, sweeping with delight –
the dark is suffused by the subtlest light.

Tell me,
how will your dreams come to life?

My 2016 #ZipOde: An Ode to Celebrate My Zip Code

Property & Copyright Bárbara Herrnsdorf Photography IMG_20160410_133608A

April, here in #Miami, is the annual month-long, multi-event celebration of #poetry!  The O, Miami organization, with principal funding by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and in partnership with WLRN, host the O, Miami Poetry Festival which, to quote The New York Times “If you live in Miami and do not read, recite or listen to a poem in April, something has gone seriously wrong.”

Each year, part of the festivities includes a #contest where Miami-Dade residents can write and submit an ode about his/her home Zip Code called #ZipOde from the end of March through to April, 21st, 2016.  The rules are the same each year.

Every #ZipOde is five lines long. Each digit of the participants Zip Code determines how many words per line. My Zip Code is 33146 so, the the first line has 3 words, the second line has 3 words, the the third line has 1 word, well, you get the idea.

Here is the #ZipOde I wrote and submitted for 2016:

Palms, banyans, kapoks
orchids, gardenias, bougainvilleas
adorn
coral arches, walkways, yards:
the jewelry of The City Beautiful.*

*33146 is in Coral Gables, which is also called The City Beautiful.
Above is a photo I took several days ago, here in Coral Gables.

The Consolation Prize

The Consolation Prize

I looked out the window to see,
who at first I believed you to be,
a gentleman caller – come calling just for me!

Then I heard a coo and saw it hadn’t been you
who had made this gentle, soft call.
I looked up in the tree and plainly did see
her perched safely up high on a branch.
She sang just for you with her intimate coo
and that is when my heart started to break.

I began to understand
that though I might be
right here close to thee
it wasn’t me you’d come to visit.

Alas, it was she
right up yonder in that tree
whose bidding you had come to do.
She had sent you below,
to fly to and fro
in search of sustenance for two.

Back to her is where you’ll soon fly,
but please be patient while I quietly cry,
so a photo I’ll make – while whispering my final goodbye.

Static

We’re entwined, then
snap –
you’re gone.
Quick!

So why?
Why then
does the pain of your absence
creep –
circling
around and
around my
neck,
squeezing,
sucking
to
the very last
drop, any
life left
inside of
me
ever so
slowly?
